Resveratrol was first discovered in 1940 in Japan. Takaoka isolated resveratrol from the roots of a White Hellebore in the same year. The same substance was later found in the roots of a Japanese Knotweed in 1963. Despite its discovery, the substance only became popular in 1992 when it was discovered to be present in the skin and seeds of grapes used in wine, and low levels in peanuts; and only became a supplement to be used in many anti-aging applications n 2006 when the health boom reached its peak.
Health Benefits of Resveratrol
Today, resveratrol is a common substances used in many dietary and health supplements used by weight watchers. It has many benefits to the human body, namely:
1. Anti-Aging
Resveratrol activates the SIRT1 gene to help repair DNA and slows down the signs of aging. The same gene also protects the cells from toxins and other radicals that can cause it to degenerate that leads to the appearance of many aging signs and symptoms, like dry skin, wrinkles, as well as reducing the damage to the skin from UV radiation.
2. Lowers Blood Sugar
Another health benefit offered by resveratrol is that it is capable of lowering the levels of sugar in the blood, perfect for diabetic patients. Studies show that resveratrol activates a group of proteins called sirtuine to regulate calories from being broken down in the human body, leading to improved levels of insulin and sugar that is beneficial to our health.
3. Cancer Prevention
Resveratrol cannot get rid of cancer since it is still in the stages of medical study, but it is a proven fact that the cell-repair capabilities induced by the introduction of this substance to the human body can help heal tumors that will eventually lead to cancer if left untreated.
4. Boost Immune System
Medical studies also revealed that resveratrol can help boost one’s lifespan by improving the overall function of the immune system to help fight common diseases that can wear out the human body.
5. Dental Care
Recent studies revealed that resveratrol can improve dental hygiene with its application. The substance reduces the adhesion of bacteria on our teeth that causes tooth decay. This is one reason why it is advisable to drink a glass of red wine after a hearty meal to make sure that no bacteria is left on your teeth that can cause decay if left unchecked.
